This work was produced at a time when my son was very ill and I was overwhelmed by fear. I had just returned from a trip to Venice, where I had been surrounded by the magnificence of some of the world’s most beautiful churches. The Virgin’s grief as expressed by the great artists of the early Renaissance spoke to me in a way that I had not understood until I felt the pain of understanding my child’s vulnerability, his body, so precious to me, just flesh and blood. After my son survived his ordeal I was particularly staggered by Mary’s inconceivable suffering.
