Kiki McGrath, “Unum Necessarium”

I am interested in drawing the human figure, and in how bodies convey emotion through gesture and movement. My current work centers around visual metaphors for spiritual experiences: seeking God, pilgrimage, suffering, and unexpected grace. Materials used in the paintings and contour drawings are acrylic paint and mixed media on canvas. Unum Necessarium grew out of series of sketches about pilgrimage; a physical action with a spiritual purpose. Several collaged figures float inside a circle of ashes made from old line drawings, and concentric circles form a labyrinth image layered on top in graphite and paint.

All of our spiritual efforts, the sole purpose of our live, unum necssarium, should be the fulfillment of our being, with God’s grace, to be conscious that the Being in the centre of ourselves is the Kingdom of God within us.
