Red, White,
Superyou, and Blue, 2004
mixed media.
Much of my
past work has revolved around the pattern of a grid. This structure has
allowed me to work within a semi-controlled environment while freeing me to be
abstract within the patterns set forth. I have always used a variety of
materials, thus giving me pleasure in processes and solving varied problems.
More recently I have utilized found objects and clothing as my primary media.
Most of these objects are stuffed, sewn, and dipped in white paint to
accentuate lines and create shadows.
Originally my
intention was to use these found items merely as a means of composition.
However, I quickly found that it was hard to look past the original function
of each item. This opened up a new level of meaning transforming simple
patterns into narratives. For instance, in Red, White, Superyou, and Blue
the figure of Superman bursts out of a canvas littered with blocks and
fabric. Images of childhood fantasies of being invincible and knowing how to
fly come to mind. Perhaps we still have those dreams. Perhaps there is
Superman that can free us from our worries, and maybe one day we will fly.
Can God be our Superman?
I invite the
viewer to look for themselves and see what might be hidden in any artwork.
Each of us are unique and have something to offer. How does your life change
the way you see the world?
