Borrowed Armor, 2006
clay, metal, wood

My identity as an artist is inextricably bound to my vocation as an art therapist. Art therapy is a process of working through the metaphors of life, deity and personhood inherent in artwork, at both an unconscious and conscious level. One explores the stories, myths and truths imbedded in an image. For me, the ceramic process is open to the multidimensional growth, the immediacy of touch, forces beyond my control, and the molding of time and the elements, all found in organic creation. Opposing elements, startling juxtapositions, unexpected challenges and gifts, and synchronistic surprises are all a part of my experience of clay, life and the ultimate Creator.

Borrowed Armor began my foray in to the process of penetrating a contained form and exposing what lies within. It is a response to the reality of the brokenness inherent in life, a piece whose roots are embedded in recalled forms and sacred images. In its surfaces, materials, and tenuous balance it speaks of the paradoxical textures of love
