Meditation in Three Parts
I, 2006intaglio, aquatint, chine collé. The computer screen was filled with the initial news reports, IM’s, and blogs: "Four Little Girls were killed today..." My heart sank as the death toll mounted and these five Amish children were linked to the faint, but deeply embedded early memory of Four Little Girls who were killed in a Birmingham church many years ago. Violence directly impacts the lives of girls, women, and children around the globe. The UN conference which inspired the name of this triptych included discussions about how meeting the Millennium Development Goals may decrease violence against girls. The three quilts are influenced by the Amish tradition of quiltmaking. Quilt Meditation I reflects upon the Four Little Girls killed in a Birmingham, AL church in 1963. Quilt Meditation II reflects upon the Five Little Girls killed in their Amish school room in 2006. Quilt Meditation III reflects upon the Millennium Development Goals' potential impact to reduce violence, particularly that which targets girls. The artists' book includes compiled excerpts of quotes attributed to Dr. M.L. King, Lancaster County families, and UN MDG conference proceedings.
