Totem, 2006
oil on wood

My recent work has been informed by church history, European travels, and the rich metaphors embedded in Christian art.

A portrait of a tree combined with a quote from Augustine: “The Lord’s cross was the devil’s mousetrap; the bait which caught him was the death of the Lord.” This imagery is also famously referenced in Campin’s Merode Altarpiece, which depicts an aged Joseph carving a mousetrap in his workshop.

The initials on the tree don’t mean anything; they happened to be on the tree I used as a model. I just like the idea of the tree bearing scars.
