In Process:
Paintings and Mixed Media by
Eric Shultis

June 12 - July 28, 2000

I often put myself and my work in situations of contrast and even conflict in order to more clearly see what is the make-up of ideas, social constructs, or p ersonal viewpoints. The physical elements of my work often combine old with new, decay with intact materials, and the physical and contemporary context of these constructions is very important. \par It is my belief that coming into the close of the twentieth ce ntury, we still have not even begun to deal with the changes and losses of the nineteenth century. Many of my pieces are in essence a catalyst for the reinstatement and embodiment of these losses. They become markers for the realization of the conflicts we live with unacknowledged.

Pablo Neruda writes in Fin De Mundo/World's End

Some protocol must be found
For establishing absence.

I am interested in this absence, for the recognition of loss makes for possibility.
The realization that something has been is also
the realization that something might be.
